SUVs reborn to deliver luxury with an attitude - Dayton Business Journal:

eragywaqer.wordpress.com
Once created to tackle off-road obstacles in hard-to-reachy places, sports utility vehicles have been reborn as urbanmassault vehicles. In a battle of one upsmanship wherer bigger is better and luxury is major players have emerged in a market once dominatexby Jeeps, Blazers and Broncos. Luxury car makers like , Lexus and Cadillac have been quick to join the frantic popularity ofthe SUV: Lexus introduced its LX450, whichg has since evolved to the LX470, in first produced its smaller sport utility, the QX4, in Lincoln introduced its Navigator in 1997; Mercedes first rolledd out its ML320 and ML430 in and Cadillac jumped on the band wagon with its released in November 1998.
These are not inexpensive toys. An Infinitoi SUV goes for around $37,000 while a loadedd Lexus weighs in atabout $60,000. Most luxuryg SUVs come with CD players, multiple power outlets, time and outside temperature displayon mirrors. Many come with sun roofs, heatedr seats and navigation systems standard. Buyers are dictating many of thestandared features, says Charles J. Epps, sales consultant for . "Lexux standardizes production because it is faster and morecost effective," Epps says. "They do what folkss like. Nobody wants to buy a stripped down truck and spend a fortune fixingit up. It is more cost effectivew to make them allthe same.
Lexus is so fast at changinbg production, whatever doesn't sell they drop real quick." One of the best-equippedr standard SUVs is thenew , which retailse for $46,525 and comes with four heated Bose stereo CD player, four wheel drivr that kicks in when the car senses the need and the On Star which is usually $1,400 down and $270 a year Larry Gullett, salesman for in Memphis, says the packagr is an introductory offer to give the car an immediate edge in the market -- since most people don't think when they think "rugged SUV." The plan worked. The Escaladre is an overnight succes swith Cadillac.
"It's become the fastest-sellingf car in the 96-year history of Gullett says. "It's bringing us youngef and more customersthan before." Gullett says many are tradinyg in other SUVs for Escalades, which gives Cadillac dealers a stock of Explorers, Expeditions, Suburbanws and other used vehicleas it's never had before. The Navigator, whichb ranges in price betweejn $43,685 and $48,000, has also brought in a youngeecustomer demographic, says Jimmy Grandberry, salesman with Covingtohn Pike Lincoln-Mercury. "All ages are buying Grandberry says.
"we've neve seen this much of the 25 and up Most observers are at a lost when trying to explain theSUV It's probably not the gas Most luxury SUVs range from 12-1 5 mpg in the city and 16-190 on the highway. And sales are equallhy divided between menand women. "I've noticed that the guys come and get them and the ladiews drivethem back," Epps says. It could be the Choices are greater than ever as SUVs are beingt introduced in both larger and smaller Ford has just come out with the which brags that it is even large rthan Chevrolet's Suburban. "It's only two inchez longer," says John Stonecipher, managerr of Gwatney Chevrolet Oldsmobile and Isuzuin Memphis.
"That'ss more of a marketing ploy than anything. The 2000 Suburbab is going to be bigger with a wholw different body style and a new On the other end ofthe spectrum, dealers like Toyotaw and Honda are coming out with smallert SUVs like the RAV-4 and the CRV, The Infiniti is one of the only luxury dealersd not to produce a full-size SUV. "Wr think this size has a more commonsense approach," says Robert Infiniti of Memphis' sales manager. "Many people feel the full-siz e SUVs are not as user friendly as they feel when they firstdrive them." And not all of the full-sizse SUVs have the third seat, including the Cadillacc Escalade.

United credit card policy could foul corporate travel - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):

qalymeled.wordpress.com
San Francisco’s dominant airline informed some travel agenciesw that as of July 20 it will no longefr let them process credit and debitg card purchases for airline ticketasusing United’s merchant-processing Instead, such agencies would have to requirwe travelers to pay with cash, process card payments with the agency’s own merchantg processing service and forward the cash to United or book the ticketd on United’s web site using the traveler’ds credit or debit card issued by , V) , (NYSE: MA) AXP) and others.
An agent using United’s web site, bypassin such travel systems as Apolloand Sabre, would not allow companies to capturr the discounts they have negotiated with United nor woulcd it allow their travel agent to survey several carriers on a rout e to find the lowest price. “Several Bay Area companies have deals with Unitedd Airlinesfor discounts,” said Marc president of Casto Travel, which isn’rt among the agencies that Unites has cut off from its merchant-processing service.
Casto says he’s reached out to some of the firm’ corporate clients to express concernover United’s new card acceptance policy, but declinecd to discuss what was said in thosw conversations. United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA) did not responxd to requests for comment. United is hopinv to shift the cost of acceptiny credit and debit cardsw onto selectedtravel agencies. Those agencies say the airline’sz move shifts to them the risk for paying out refundsx if the carrier goes While it’s also likely to reducwe the amount of money that United has to keep in the bank to guar d against charge-backs, it woulrd increase those requirements for the travelo agents.
That’s a nonstarter for most agencies — and theird banks, which would have to honor charge-backm requests that could total billions of dollars in the event of anairlinde bankruptcy. “I don’t think there’s any travelp agency, including American Express Travel, that coul shoulder that liability,” Casto said.

’ The bank has no definitive planxs in place to return the but Humphrey is eager to get out of the federapl program due to retroactiv e changes to the initial Capital Purchasew Plan agreement, including limits on executiver compensation that deny the payment of cash incentivees to employees until TARP funds are “It’s just the fact that there are more certifications, more more compliance requirements and, frankly, with that comex risk,” Humphrey said. “We’re heavily regulatecd anyway. How would you like to enter into a contracrt and then four months later have the terma of thatcontract change?

An announcemenyt was expected May 28 and updates will be postedon www.buffalo.bizjournals.
con Last month, M&T Bank’s chief financial Rene Jones, said the bank “tend(s) not to be a firstt mover” and plans to wait for more clarity from the governmeng before repaying the money. KeyBanj officials have said they want to pay back the fundsx as soonas possible, but there is no time fram in place. The Capitalo Purchase Plan was introduced last fall by the governmeng as a way to increasde lending and jolt thefaltering economy. Under initial terms of the plan, banksz were required to raises private capital before TARP fundx couldbe returned.
But some termas of the plans changedfollowing February’s economivc stimulus bill, leaving repayment guidelinese less than clear. According to a May 22 report fromthe U.S. Treasury Department, just 16 banks around the countr – including one Upstats New York bank, in Syracuse – have been allowed by the governmengt to repayTARP funds. Several calls made to the U.S. Treasury Departmenyt to clarify TARP repayment terms werenot returned. As part of the Capitaol Purchase Plan, banks such as Five Star must make quarterlyh interest payments tothe government. So far, Five Star has made two paymentxtotaling $900,000, Humphrey said.
The money has been used to leveragethe bank’s growth, including its commercial, agriculture, residential home equity and indirect automobile loan he said. About $200 million has been lent by the bank from the time it receivexd TARP moneythrough April, he said. Humphreyy insists that the money was nota rather, it was intended for banks that were alreadyh healthy. And while the bank, early on, viewec the Capital Purchase Plan as a positive retroactive changes to the agreement have made it less he said. But he wants to make sure his bank will supporrt both depositors and borroweras before returningthe money.
