The city received the award in the categorg of Excellence in EconomicDiversification Strategies, whicjh recognizes responses to plant closures and other economic that promote economic diversification. The competitioh is open to nonprofits; state and regional governments; and universitiesd and colleges. Cabarrus and Rowan counties lost 4,300 manufacturinf jobs when textilemanufacturer Kannapolis-basedPillowtex Corp. closed in July 2003. Two yeard later, California billionaire David Murdoclk announced plans forthe N.C. Research Campus at the 350-acre former Pillowtex headquarters andmanufacturingh site.
The life-sciences hub includes the participationb ofDuke University, the UNC System, the N.C. Community Colleg System, other educational institutions and business The total investment is expected toreacjh $1.8 billion. Residential and commercial developments are rising around the campus with hopee ofturning Kannapolis, a former textilse town, into a biotech center.
